Dr Ron Paul is the only candidate who can heal the economy
Submitted by nsk on 31 January, 2008 - 04:46.Dr Ron Paul is the only candidate in the US 2008 elections who is able and willing to tackle the real causes of the economic problems facing the US (and the world). Smart Americans who don't want to see by themselves what the 1930s were like must vote for Ron Paul. You can learn more by reading about his economic revitalisation plan.

Debian lenny's Evolution can't SSL until next upgrade, use KMail instead
Submitted by nsk on 29 January, 2008 - 02:20.If you use the "lenny" testing version of Debian and the Evolution email client, beware: SSL in the latest upgrade is now broken, wich means you can't connect to encrypted IMAP servers. The easiest workaround is to use KMail, at least until Debian uploads the new Evolution build to lenny's FTP archives.
My IQ
Submitted by nsk on 28 January, 2008 - 04:09.I just achieved a score of 126 on the eCMA intelligence IQ test of the High IQ Society, even though I took the test while I was feeling tired and sleepy. A score of 124 qualifies for lifetime membership to the High IQ Society, but I chose not to join, at least not at this time.

How did I end up with 6 green pens?
Submitted by nsk on 24 January, 2008 - 01:58.Together with some other equipment, I also ordered a few highlighter pens from an online vendor:
- Yellow highlighter x 3
- Green highlighter x 3
- Orange highlighter x 3
- Pink highlighter x 3
It is a specific model of highlighter pen which I liked very much and thus I decided to try out all of its colours to see how they look on my books (I like to write notes and marginalia on my books as well as highlighting what attracts my interest). Since I also bought lots of other equipment from the same vendor, I thought it was a good moment to order these nice highlighters as well.
The online vendor contacted me and said that they didn't really have the pink highlighters in their warehouse. I said that's no big deal, and I asked them what they would do. They said they would send the pink highlighters to me at no additional cost with their truck a few days later. This vendor operates their own fleet of trucks for sending stuff to customers.
I thought for a moment and I decided that it would be ridiculous to burn petroleum and further warm our planet only for three pens, even if I don't pay for it. Trucks burn lots of fuel, and if I could save them from having to come here again for 3 pens then perhaps they wouldn't burn so much fuel. So I told them to ship any other colour of pen they liked instead. They told me they would give me 6 green pens.
So, if you ever see any of my books, you won't have to ask why it's all highlighted in green!
Home office upgrades again
Submitted by nsk on 24 January, 2008 - 01:38.I am again upgrading my home office. This time I bought some specialty equipment that allows me to do all my work while standing, ie without using a chair at all. While I actually do most of my work outside with my laptops, I still spend significant hours in my home office and I wanted to improve its ergonomics. Now with the new equipment I will be able to work in my office while standing, walking around, or even combining work with gymnastic workouts, thus keeping me fit without having to pause my work.
I was right to exit the stock market in 2008
Submitted by nsk on 22 January, 2008 - 20:03.As probably most serious investors know, yesterday 21 January 2008 stock markets all over the world started to fall, and as readers of my blog know, on 2 January 2008 I exited the stock market for good to focus on real commodities.
I cannot see the future, but I believe that the world economy is like a paper giant, ready to fall in the first wind storm, because the big guys who run the economy have been irresponsible. For me, it is only a matter of time until what I read in history books of the 1900-1950 era is repeated, and I have taken care to be ready.
I am now very happy holding real value in tangible commodities. Papers, including fiat money, are worthless in my view.
Notice, disclaimer, etc: I do not offer investment advice, I merely explain my investment strategies in my personal diary, which I make available online only for my friends.
A nightmare...
Submitted by nsk on 22 January, 2008 - 00:32.During my sleep today I saw a nightmare. It wasn't long, like other of my dreams, but it was very frightening:
In the nightmare I was studying at a university during a future dark age and I received a visit from an academic supervisor who warned me that I was choosing too many elective classes in science and as such I would have to replace them with religious studies!
My scifi dream
Submitted by nsk on 7 January, 2008 - 07:52.Below you can find a summary of the dream I saw while I was sleeping this night. It was in full colour, just like all of my dreams. Like in many of my dreams, in the dream I was like an invisible observer. However, the character which was me in the dream was different from me in reality. It is like science fiction. I write it in present tense. Enjoy:
I am a small invisible eye able to move in the air everywhere I want and see everything in my view. While I can see everything in my dream, I cannot interact with the characters in the dream. I now see that I am inside a big spaceship travelling in interstellar space. I also see the first character in the dream. This character is me, but is not like me in reality. How can I be both a person who is sleeping, and both an eye and a character in the dream? So, while I am sleeping I am three persons. This happens many times in my dreams. All these three persons have their own feelings and thoughts, and I can perceive all these thoughts and feelings at the same time. To avoid confusion, I shall give a name to my character in the dream, and this name is Marc. I should make it clear, though, that this name was not featured in the dream. So, when I say "I" I mean either me as an invisible eye in the dream or me as a sleeping real person who is dreaming, depending on the context.
Marc is a young 25-something or 30-something male with long hair and in a spaceship uniform. These uniforms are grey. He looks a bit like French. He is in a big spaceship travelling in interstellar space. I do not know what this spaceship does or where it goes or who commands it.
Marc loves a woman in the spaceship, and he now goes to see her. He goes to a room in the spaceship which is full of blue lights. He opens a glass door and he looks at some metallic cylinders. Each cylinder has a nametag on it. He chooses a cylinder with a nametag containing a female name. I cannot see what this name is, but for the sake of the story let's say that this name is Joanne.
Marc removes the cylinder with the name Joanne from its place and goes with it to a machine. He puts the cylinder into a hole and he presses a button. A door opens in the machine after some noise, and a 25-something woman in a spaceship uniform, Joanne, gets out smiling looking into Marc's eyes. They are in love.
This machine seems like to be able to read all information about the state of particles into a human body, recreate them based on the information stored into the cylinder, and re-store the updated particle state information there. What it does to the actual particles, I do not know.
Marc and Joanne speak for a minute. They speak a language I cannot understand. Both Marc and Joanne look a bit like French people, but their language is not French. Even though Marc is me in the dream and I can understand his thoughts and feelings, I cannot do so while he is speaking. Strange.
Marc and Joanne go to Marc's room. This is a work room, where Marc takes care of matters related to the spaceship. There is, however, a personal room for Marc as well. Marc opens the door to his personal room and gets inside together with Joanne. I understand that they want to have some sex.
Joanne gets nude, but I cannot see her. I can only see her face, and anything else is blurred by some form of mental wall, even though in the dream nothing obstructs the view.
While Joanne is nude and is smiling while chatting with Marc, a spaceship crew member gets into the room to notify Marc about some kind of emergency in the spaceship. The doors do not lock, even in the personal rooms. The crew member sees Joanne nude, but he does not care. She also does not care. It seems like nudity is allowed in the spaceship.
Marc discusses with the crew member about the emergency. I cannot listen to the conversation. Marc goes with Joanne back to the room full of blue lights. They look each other in the eyes for a moment, and Joanne opens the machine's door and gets into the machine. Marc puts the cylinder with the nametag 'Joanne' into the machine and presses a button. The machine makes a noise and ejects the cylinder out. Joanne as a material person is gone. Marc opens a glass door and puts the cylinder in its place, among many other cylinders. He then goes to another room in the spaceship to take care of the spaceship emergency, whatever this is.
I do not follow Marc, so I do not know what happens to the spaceship. I remain in the room with the cylinders and the blue lights. While I stay there, I understand a wave of thoughts and emotions coming out of Joanne's cylinder. This is strange. Cylinders are not supposed to think and feel. Cylinders are just information storage facilities, and the person stored into each cylinder can only think and feel after they are re-created in the machine able to read the information stored into the cylinders.
Something really strange happens now. I understand a wave of thought coming from somewhere outside the spaceship, if not outside the whole dream. This thought says the following, not in words but in pure thought: "Joanne transcends into the meta-4 dimensions". I wonder why it says "meta-4" and not "5", and what the difference is, if there is any, or did it try to say all dimensions above 4?
I now see some strange blue cloud forming around Joanne's cylinder. Strange. I see Joanne's bodyform being formed into this cloud. At first she is transparent, and she gets fully opaque within a minute. Now Joanne is fully formed inside that blue cloud, and she starts to walk. She gets out of the blue cloud. She wears a spaceship uniform, but her body has a strange blue colour, which is different from the normal human white colour she had the last time I saw her. Not only that, but there is a blue aura around her body. Strange.
Joanne does not smile. She tries to find Marc. She gets into some corridors and I follow her to see what will happen. I understand that she feels perplexed and worrying. She cannot find Marc. She cannot find anybody. All the crew is gone, and she is alone in the spaceship! There does not seem to be any damage on the spaceship, though. What happened? Where is Marc? I just do not know.
Now in the dream I stop seeing Joanne and the spaceship. I now see myself sleeping. That me is my real me so I can see myself as how I really look like. In the dream I see myself waking up and getting to my computer to write down this dream. My computer is moved by about 3-4 metres from where it should be. How and why is my computer moved? I do not know, but I witness myself (the me in the dream who woke up, not me as the eye) getting a bit angry over the moved computer.
I then wake up in reality. I am not angry, I am happy. I find my computer at its usual place and I wrote down this. Still do not know what happened to Marc and Joanne, though. Hope you liked this little scifi dream!
Earthquake
Submitted by nsk on 6 January, 2008 - 05:29.At this moment I'm writing this (Sunday 6 January 2007 07:21 morning) there was a very strong and long earthquake. Don't worry, I'm not hurt!
I just hope no one else got hurt either here in Athens or all over Greece.
The good thing with having laptops and 3G Internet is that I can continue taking care of my work even if I have to get out of my home office after an earthquake!
The earthquake felt very strange because it felt as if it was "filtered" by something. I thought it was the new anti-earthquake columns installed in my building lately, but no: I just learn that according to the latest data the earthquake is probably 6.5R, long, near Leonidio, and very deep. The depth explains why this earthquake felt strange to me!
I am always living with the expectation of earthquakes hitting me. For this reason, I treat every day as a potential day for the occurrence of natural destructions. So, I always maintain a survival backpack equipped with food, water, and a small laptop with GSM connectivity, and I also have some systems that wake me up in night if they detect an earthquake. In addition, if I cannot make it out of the building, I have some metallic furniture specifically made with earthquakes in mind. I also monitor all earthquakes, however small, all over the world thanks to mailing lists (thanks USGS and EMSC!), live maps, and data feeds from geological stations.

Slovenia EU presidency 2008: Welcome!
Submitted by nsk on 3 January, 2008 - 19:55.Wonderful Slovenia took over the EU presidency for 2008 on 1 January 2008. I wish to welcome Slovenia into this important EU custom. Albeit largely symbolical, EU presidency can and often does present various opportunities for a country. Slovenia must also be proud for entering the EU and becoming a Eurozone member so quickly.
Cyprus and Malta: Welcome to Euro!
Submitted by nsk on 3 January, 2008 - 17:47.Cyprus and Malta, which have been EU members from 2004, joined the eurozone on 1 January 2007! I welcome both countries to the Euro club, and I hope more countries will be able to join soon. You can see Cypriot Euro coins and the Maltese Euro coins. They are both very nice, but I think Cyprus has created the most beautiful Euro coins I have ever seen, in a tie with the Greek coins (but other countries also have very nice coins, for example France).
Americans: Support Dr Ron Paul
Submitted by nsk on 3 January, 2008 - 14:37.Albeit I am in Europe and not a citizen of the US, I take an active interest in US politics. The reason? Simply put, with USA being the world's hyperpower, its culture and politics are quickly imitated by the rest of the world.
Politics is not an exact science, so it is difficult to make choices that are perfect, and I do not believe there can ever be a perfect politician, but some are better than others. Based on my evaluation, I think I have found the one presidential candidate for the 2008 elections who really stands out: Dr Ron Paul.
My evaluation was based on information contained in Wikipedia and on the condidates's official sites. For some particular candidates, I used the OnTheIssues.org website to make sure they put their words into action during their traceable political career.
My interests for the future US president are mainly related to foreign policy, individual freedom, and support for a free market economy. Specifically, the perfect US president for me would be one who would repeal most laws introduced by George W. Bush while being reluctant to use military power outside the US borders, but at the same time willing to step in to protect Europe or other allied entities against foreign invasion when needed, pursuing a policy of economic liberalism without protectionism, supporting a sustainable development and avoiding damaging the environment, protecting the civil liberties of citizens and non-citizens alike, being welcome to legal immigrants, pursuing a small government, keeping church and state separate, making sure that the US is a good place to operate a business in a competitive environment, supporting homeschooling and free or open-source software, letting Americans who are not dangerous to society to protect their lives against criminals in accordance with the Second Amendment while controlling gun crime, creating a justice system where criminals would be encouraged to become respected members of society rather than being punished, and ensuring that the First Amendment (free speech) is uphold as a cultural value higher than any law and any other limitation. Because we live in non-ordinary times, my most significant issue for a US president is the likelihood of repealing laws introduced during the Bush administration and getting foreign policy right.
So, based on what I have read and learnt about Dr Ron Paul, I think he is the only one who comes closest to what I would consider a perfect US president. If he succeeds in his campaign, he is likely to exit Iraq (I hope after making sure the new Iraqi state can sustain itself and not degenerate into chaos), repeal laws damaging the civil liberties of Americans, encourage a more free economic environment while cutting back government spending, leaving more initiatives to the states, and encouraging homeschooling. I think these are all good things, and if implemented in the US there is a good chance they may be imitated in other nations as well. Such policies would also make the US a good destination for business travelers and legal immigrants again (the civil liberties erosion during the last 5-10 years and a questionable foreign policy has made many people, including independent investors and businesspersons, unwilling to travel in the US, let alone live and operate businesses there).
It should be noted that free software activist RMS Richard M. Stallman has some interesting things to say about Ron Paul: " The only Democratic or Republican candidate, aside from Kucinich, that clearly stands for human rights, democracy, and an end to torture, secret prisons and the occupation of Iraq is Ron Paul. I urge Republicans to support him for that party's nomination". I believe RMS is right: The only candidates from the two mainstream parties who are most likely to repeal Bush laws and not initiate another war are Kucinich and Ron Paul. From these two candidates, I think the most sane choice is Dr Ron Paul.
It should be noted that when I say that "support" a politician, it must be understood as "support among the available candidates". Please note that while I generally support Dr Ron Paul, I do not necessarily agree with everything he says: On many issues I have my own views. However, Dr Ron Paul is the one who echoes my views most.
Below you can see my perceptions of various candidates and their policies. My perceptions are expressed as numbers, with -3 meaning "extreme disapproval or distrust", -2 being "moderate disapproval or distrust", -1 meaning "slight disapproval or distrust", 0 being "completely neutral, ambivalent, or uninformed, +1 meaning "slight approval", +2 being "moderate approval", and +3 meaning "extreme enthusiastic approval".
First, I iterate all candidates I read about in Wikipedia and other sites. They are ordered by score, but within the same score band the order in which they appear is not significant, and in fact it's random (or more specifically, written in the order I researched them and then didn't bother up to put them in alphabetical order!). So, here we go:
- Ron Paul: +1
- Dennis Kucinich: 0
- Mike Gravel: 0
- John McCain: -1
- Joe Biden: -1
- Hillary Clinton: -1
- Chris Dodd: -1
- John Edwards: -1
- Barack Obama: -1
- Bill Richardson: -1
- Rudy Giuliani: -1
- Mike Huckabee: -1
- Duncan Hunter: -1
- Mitt Romney: -1
- Tom Tancredo: -1
- Fred Thompson: -1
The above list was built by initially assigning a score of -1 to every politician, and I enacted a rule that disallowed me from assigning a score higher than +1 to anyone (within the overall scale of -3 to +3), because I generally distrust all politicians regardless of affiliation or positions. I then began reading about them and their positions and character, and those who sounded good were assigned a score of 0, while those who sounded brilliant and I researched enough to be able to have an informed opinion on them were assigned a score of +1, which is my support threshold. Dr Ron Paul is the only candidate who qualified for my support.
Some other candidates were of particular interest: I liked Mike Gravel's views on many social issues very much but I did not research him enough and I am a bit suspicious of his views on free economy. But even if Gravel was at +1 together with Dr Ron Paul, I would still support Ron Paul. Gravel could be made a great vice president, thought. Kucinich was interesting because he would assuredly repeal all Bush laws with no single exception almost immediately, but I canot agree with many of his proposed policies, so this means no support. Some US politicians who as of 3 January 2008 are not candidates but who have attracted my interest are Al Gore and Bloomberg (the NYC mayor). But again, if they were candidates I would still give my support to Ron Paul.
Now let me show you how much I approve or disapprove the positions of Ron Paul on various issues, as described on his campaign website:
- Home schooling: +3
- No taxes on tips: +3
- Property rights and eminent domain: +3
- Privacy and personal liberty: +3
- War and foreign policy: +2
- Racism: +2
- Debt and taxes: +2
- Social security: +2
- Second amendment: +2
- Life and liberty: +1
- Environment: +1
- Health care: 0
- Education: 0
- Health freedom: 0
- Border security and immigration reform: -1
- American independence and sovereignty: -1
The primary reason for the score -1 in the issue of American independence is because I perceive participation in international organisations as a good thing in general, and I maintain a positive perception of the United Nations, so I would be more inclined to maintain the current status quo, although Ron Paul may know more than me on this subject, as I have not researched much the effects of international organisations on national independence. However, I generally prefer to see countries being open to international cooperation.
The -1 on border security is because I dislike seeing border fences, and I want America to be welcome to immigrants, although I can see that sometimes uncontrolled immigration can lead to social problems (it is however my belief that all immigration problems come from an expensive unsustainable welfare state and that welfare should better be left to charities). I think immigration is good for the economy, but I also believe that immigrants must respect the laws of their new country. I am a bit confused by Ron Paul's idea to end birthright citizenship, because I am afraid that this could lead to statelessness, however I can see and understand his reasoning, and what he says might be right. I should research more these issues to form a better opinion.
As a side note, Ron Paul also supports alternative currencies. According to Wikipedia article on Liberty Dollar, a firm issuing private currency, after its offices were raided by FBI Ron Paul said: "We stand on the precipice of an unprecedented monetary collapse, and as a result many people have begun to look for alternatives to the dollar...I believe that the American people should be free to choose the type of currency they prefer to use. The ability of consumers to adopt alternative currencies can help to keep the government and the Federal Reserve honest, as the threat that further inflation will cause more and more people to opt out of using the dollar may restrain the government from debasing the currency".
You can learn more about Dr Ron Paul by visiting his official site, reading on Wikipedia about his biography, his campaign, his political positions, and his sponsored legislation, networking with him on LinkedIn, MySpace, or Facebook, studying his past voting record and stances on various issues, learning about his support for homeschooling. If you also support him, even if you are not a US citizen, feel free to put a graphic button on your blog or site.
My nerdy keyboard: Typematrix EZ-Reach 2030
Submitted by nsk on 3 January, 2008 - 02:42.I recently received my new TypeMatrix EZ-Reach 2030 keyboard, which supports the Dvorak layout in addition to the standard QWERTY. It is the third keyboard I buy from this company, and my second 2030. This second 2030 is replacing my old 2020.
It is just awesome. I always liked keyboards with matrix layouts, where the keys are in straight lines one under the other, as opposed to staggered columns layout commonly used. This keyboard also features big shift keys and centre enter and backspace keys.
I also have many other keyboards with other layouts, but Typematrix is the one I use most of the time.
This keyboard supports skins. I do not really like them much because they remind me of my old ZX Spectrum (I never liked rubber keys, however they have the advantage of generating less noise while typing). Nevertheless they allow me to switch between QWERTY and Dvorak easily, and they protect the keyboard from dust. I still use QWERTY for languages other than English, as I have bothered to learn Dvorak only for English, so I have both Dvorak and QWERTY skins.
I am exiting the stock market to focus on commodities
Submitted by nsk on 2 January, 2008 - 16:37.At this moment I am writing this, gold actually made the jump and the price at this moment in New York City is 857.70 USD (not closed yet). The last highest price was 850 USD in 1980. Yes, we live in historic times.
I now have taken my decision: I am exiting the stock market for good.
In fact the thought was in my head for months, but today was the day of the final decision. I am not going to invest in any stock market again, at least not for the next few years. Just as I exited the real estate and forex markets before, I will do the same now with the stock market, albeit for different reasons (in real estate I lose money because smarter guys controlled the market, in forex I exited at relatively the same state as when I entered after I lost my confidence in any currency not backed by gold, in stock market I was able to earn good returns on investment by investing in various companies including mines, banks, technology startups, publishers, etc, and by the way I never tried to track any index, I was only investing in individual companies after careful analysis, but I now have identified much more lucrative opportunities elsewhere and I also have a different investment philosophy now). Of course my investment portfolio was always in its majority composed of commodities (and my return on investment has always been exceptionally good), but now it will be exclusively composed of commodities, nothing else.
I have already given some sell orders and will give more soon until I sell every stock I own. I will then reallocate this money into commodities. And when I say commodities I mean real stuff, not paper stock in companies operating in commodity markets.
I am not going to buy gold right now, and I am not going to sell either. I actually NEVER sell gold. I only buy gold. In all my life I have sold gold only once, and I am not going to do it again. I do not speculate with gold, I do with other commodities but not with gold. Gold is special.
My focus now will be on some commodities that many people would not easily consider investments, but I am not going to reveal more details for the time being.
Apart from the market reasons that I make the move into a portfolio composed exclusive of commodities, there are also philosophical reasons. Paper has no tangible value, even in the form of currency or stock. Commodities, on the other hand, are true wealth. I am also considering a cautionary re-entry into the real estate, but I am still not sure about that as last time I had bad experiences (at that time I tried to mix real estate with property development).
Real wealth is tangible, and no government is able to produce more wealth by printing more banknotes. This madness must stop, and a digital gold currency or a time-based currency could help a lot. By the way if you are in the US, consider voting for Dr Ron Paul in your elections, and have a look at what he said about the Liberty Dollar.
Note that this is not investment advice, as I am merely documenting my new investment strategies. Just because I get out of the stock market does not mean that you should do the same or that I advocate this.

Fake email MX records and other antispam measures
Submitted by nsk on 23 December, 2007 - 00:32.In the last few days I have activated fake MX records to fight spam. The good news is that the decrease of incoming spam was amazing (over 95%). The bad news is that it may affect some email communications, and that the spam was so much before that even the remaining 5% now that gets through is still too much.
The fake MX records I employ are under my own control. I do not use any third-party service, so there is no danger that any sent emails may be sent to other recipients.
However, there are some disadvantages, and anyone who sends me email must be informed: First, any email you send may take longer to reach my eyes, because your server will have to re-try once or twice for my server to accept the message. Second, if your email server does not automatically re-tries all of my MX records upon failure, then I will never receive your message. More specifically, we may face difficulty in email communication if your email server uses qmail.
Other email antispam measures I use include spamassassin at SMTP time with exim, very sensitive rules, and Bayesian filtering. This means that if your message looks like a spam to a computer, then I will not see it. More specifically, if you send HTML messages instead of plain text and you use too big fonts, then it will get automatically rejected and will never reach my eyes.
Big clients, of course, will be entered into the whitelist.
The new antispam measures have not created any difficulties in my communication, and I do not foresee any future problems. I monitor my email server daily in great detail, and if I notice any problems I will take care.

Please help to liberate OS/2
Submitted by nsk on 7 December, 2007 - 16:58.OS/2 was a great operating system developed by IBM. Now a group of volunteers have sent a letter to IBM and opened a petition to ask for a copy of the OS/2 source code under an appropriate licence for public use. I have signed the petition with the following comment:
Opening the source of OS/2 would be an incredible contribution to the computer science educational community, and to the free software community as well. OS/2 is of great historical, technical, and academic interest.
If you want to help liberate OS/2 and make it available to the education and free software communities, please sign the OS2World.com petition.
I am now an open business networker
Submitted by nsk on 27 November, 2007 - 03:58.I decided to become a LION (LinkedIn Open Networker), so everyone who wants to connect with me on LinkedIn (a professional social networking site) can do so as I accept all invitations. Just invite me to your network through my LinkedIn profile.
What is an open networker? The typical profile of an open networker is characterised by a high number of connections (often more than 500), the willingness to help others make contacts, and the belief in the idea that every new contact may bring value in the future. Open networkers are many times very successful businesspersons, entrepreneurs, managers, investors, consultants, or experts. Open networkers not just accept all connect invitations, but they actively help others to make introductions and meet new potential partners and associates. In this sense, open networkers form one of the most vibrant communities in many social networking sites, including LinkedIn.
Lastly but not least, please take notice that I also use other business social networking sites, including Ecademy, so you can also connect with me through these if you wish. You can see my Ecademy profile.
Note: Clients with which I have an NDA need to know that if they choose to use a social networking site to connect with me, then under certain conditions competitors may be able to infer some potentially usable information through the site's search facility. Thus, you may want to ask me for advice before using social networking if you have worked with me under confidential terms.

Generic management consulting services discontinued
Submitted by nsk on 25 November, 2007 - 17:45.From 9 June 2007 until 25 November 2007 I offered generic business management and marketing consulting services, but now I am discontinuing this venture to focus on specific niches and to make time for other projects. I decided to exit the general management consulting market, as I found other more valuable niches to invest my time. However, this does not mean that I may not return to this market in the future.
I wish to say a big public thank you to the people with which I worked with while I was offering this service. Most clients, however, were already taking advantage of my software engineering consultancy so we will continue to be in touch. Those who met me only through my generic business consultancy will receive a special surprise gift (most of you should have received it already).
One of the specific business consulting niches I now want to focus more is name consulting for viral marketing campaigns; for more information visit my new site Vironame.com.
As I no longer offer generic management consulting services, please do not contact me for new projects in this area. You are, of course, welcome to contact me about software consulting, wiki consulting, name consulting, and intranet consulting.

New pet projects launched
Submitted by nsk on 3 November, 2007 - 17:09.On 12 September 2007 I launched the new incarnation of Wikinerds, a wiki for people who enjoy science and computers, or have other academic interests. See it at wikinerds.org.
On 3 November 2007 I founded AlgoLibre, a grassroots effort to bring free computing and network services to free software developers. I envisage AlgoLibre becoming a not-for-profit charity organisation in the future, with your support. See it at algolibre.org.
Server upgrades
Submitted by nsk on 28 October, 2007 - 06:31.I am in the process of upgrading my server infrastructure to accommodate my growing needs for my professional and personal projects. As always, Debian GNU/Linux was chosen as the default server OS, using only free software. All existing and future clients will benefit significantly from these upgrades. Soon I will be able to provide dedicated IP addresses as well for those who need them. Existing clients can, as noted in the news section of the client's portal, find more details in their mailbox. New interesting clients can contact me, but note that I am currently too busy so I may be unable to accept new major assignments for the coming few months.
SPI membership
Submitted by nsk on 28 October, 2007 - 06:20.Today I decided to become a non-contributing member of SPI (Software in the Public Interest), the organisation which supports my operating system of choice, Debian GNU/Linux.
